Internship Programs

The goal of South Shore Mental Health's Clinical Internship Program is to prepare doctoral level psychology students for careers in clinical practice with an emphasis on community mental health. We also offer a master’s level social work internship program to approximately 12 students. If you are a social work student, contact your school placement office to see if there is an existing training relationship.

The training faculty is made up of psychologists, social workers, nurses, and psychiatrists from South Shore Mental Health and our allied training sites. Our staff teaches through seminars and direct supervision. Professionally renowned consultants from Boston add special expertise to the training program.

We train 5 pre-doctoral psychology interns who may elect to major in the child or adult track. (For 2012 we will train 2 interns in each track.

Pre-doctoral Psychology Internship

Thank you for your interest in this internship in Clinical Psychology. Beginning in 1963, and continuously since then, there has been an APA Accredited Pre-doctoral Internship in Clinical Psychology in place at South Shore Mental Health. The program's primary model is a Professional Practitioner model. Its overarching goal is to prepare psychologists for applied clinical work in community-based multidisciplinary settings. This is accomplished through clinical supervision of direct service, didactic experience, and exposure to multiple service delivery systems in a managed care environment.

Research and practice are integrated through the distribution and discussion of journal articles and other writings highlighting research contributions to the practice of psychology. This occurs in case presentations, seminars, and supervision.

You will find the SSMH application along with the descriptions of our training program as links on the webpage. Our application and "supplemental materials" should be uploaded on the AAPI ONLINE site at www.appic.org.

The deadline to submit your application and supporting materials is (Nov. 5, 2011). Please be sure to keep available the preferred date you choose for your interview as there is little flexibility for change once applications are received. If you have any further questions please contact Bruce Roberts, Psy.D., Director of Clinical Training, at broberts@ssmh.org.

Training Tracks

Training in the clinical psychology internship program involves one of two tracks, Adult or Child/Adolescent. Each includes a primary outpatient placement and a secondary placement in a different service. Half of an intern's time is spent in the primary placement each week and the remainder is spent in the secondary site. (Secondary placements will be discussed during interviews and assigned after matches are confirmed).

A. Child/Adolescent Outpatient Track:

The primary placement for the children’s track is Bayview Associates at One Adams Place on Willard Street, Quincy, MA. One intern will spend their rotation at the Adolescent Acute Residential Treatment Unit at McLean Hospital SouthEast. Another secondary placement is at South Shore Educational Collaborative; a third placement is in the In-Home Therapy (IHT) Program. (This placement is not available in 2012.)

B. Adult Outpatient/Inpatient Track:

The primary placement for the adult outpatient track is also at Bayview Associates. Secondary placements are in the inpatient adult unit and partial program at McLean Hospital SouthEast.
