“Step One is a first step in turning fear into hope; confusion into confidence. Early Intervention is not simply a program-it’s a philosophy of family centered care. It’s a program where professionals listen to what families need and affirm their choices. “
– STEP ONE FAMILY
“During recovery, we are reminded by the staff at South Shore Mental Health that the time we spent drinking took far more time than the time we will spend learning to take care of ourselves. So, now, instead of drinking to cope with stress I now ride road bikes, meditate- I remind myself to let things go that get to me, that things will work themselves out, and not dwell on the negative. If there is one thing I would want others to know is that, ‘there is hope, you do not need to live life less than fully, – be honest with yourself- above all remain open minded.”

“Two years ago I would have never would have thought that I would be sitting here telling my story.
It began with a phone call. On the other end was the police informing us that our daughter Cathy was found dead. Words cannot describe what was going on in our heads at that point in time or what we were feeling that day…but over the next few days as we learned the details, buried our daughter, and we also began to witness how a life filled with traumatic events had impacted our grandchildren.
Shortly after her mother’s death, our granddaughter would exhibit extreme mood swings and at times could not stop screaming to the point of being inconsolable. The screams were so loud you could hear them outside of the house I shudder to think what our neighbors thought.
We tried everything- but nothing worked. —- we were referred to South Shore Mental Health’s In Home Therapy program by a caseworker but we thought we could handle this and did not call…… after a few weeks of trying to help our grandchildren on our own- it became very clear to us, that we were a family in need of support and support it what the IHT team provided…… “We believe we have a good family and through all of this we have “pulled together” becoming stronger and more resilient. South Shore Mental Health’s In Home Therapy team took us through this past year and a half and helped to make our lives go from unbearable to bearable.”
