Internship Competencies

The specific goals and objectives of the training program are defined in a list of competencies to be achieved by completion and outlined below.

     Objective:
1.  Clinical Intervention

  a. Interns will be able to negotiate a clear treatment contract with each client, signed and documented in the clinical      record

  b. Interns will provide individual psychotherapy at an entry level of professional practice

  c. Interns will provide family psychotherapy and/or consultation, as needed, at an entry level of professional practice

  d. Interns will provide group psychotherapy at an entry level of professional practice

  e. Interns will be able to consult and collaborate with other involved professional, programs, and service agencies, as       appropriate

  f. Interns will intervene in at least one clinical case in which diversity issues are identified

  g. Interns will provide clinical supervision/consultation to agency staff as appropriate

2.  Clinical Assessment

  a. Interns will demonstrate knowledge of adult and/or child developmental issues in diagnostic reports, consistent with      their client population

  b. Interns will demonstrate sufficient knowledge of theories of personality and psychotherapy as reflected in their       ability to develop intervention strategies from assessment data

  c. Interns will include cultural and ethnic factors in developing diagnostic and therapeutic formulations

  d. Interns will demonstrate integration of pertinent historical and medical history in their clinical assessment and       planning for clients

  e. Interns will develop skills in gathering data from and providing consultation/liaison services to other professionals,       programs, or agencies

  f. Interns will be able to access risk management issues, including self care, suicidality and homicidality, as they      evaluate mental status

  g. Interns will independently administer, score, interpret and report on standardized psychological test batteries      (approx. 6  per year), including measures of intelligence, cognition and personality functioning utilizing objective and      projective methods

3.  Interpersonal

  a. Interns will develop awareness of personal issues that may affect their work as profesional psychologists

  b. Interns will develop appropriate working relationships with staff and outside professionals

4.  Administrative

  a. Interns will provide required writen documentation of all clinical work

  b. Interns will provide other administrative documents as needed (e.g. billing forms, prior approvals etc.)

  c. Interns will maintain active clinical caseloads of sixteen hours of direct service to clients per week, on the average

5.  Supervision

  a. Full time interns will participate in four hours of supervision each week, including at least two hours of individual       supervision

  b. Interns will provide supervisors with evidence of clinical work in whatever form/medium is required by the      supervisor.  The supervisor will sign off on all medical records generated by the intern

  c. Interns will be observed directly for at least one case at whatever frequency is determined to be appropriate. This      may be done via video/audiotape if necessary, with appropriate permissions and releases secured by the intern
